Does your face feel tight straight after cleansing? That feeling can be a sign that the water, product or technique is more than your skin needs right now. A gentler routine can make particular sense as the weather turns colder.
01Why skin can feel tight after washing
Cleansing removes dirt, sweat, excess oil and product residue. At the same time, surfactants can interact with lipids and proteins in the skin’s outer layer. Depending on the formula and your skin, this may be felt as dryness, irritation or tightness. Very hot water and vigorous rubbing can place extra strain on already dry skin.
Occasional tightness is not a diagnosis. If burning, marked redness, cracking or itching continues, ask a dermatologist to check the cause.
02Use less friction and less heat
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends lukewarm water, applying cleanser with your fingertips rather than a washcloth or sponge, and gently patting the face dry. You do not need a heavy lather or vigorous scrubbing. The aim is to remove residue without making cleansing longer or harsher than it needs to be.
03Moisturiser follows cleansing
Pat your face dry and apply moisturiser while your skin still feels comfortable rather than completely dried out. Moisturisers can help hold water in the skin. In the morning, follow with a separate sunscreen with a stated SPF.
If you use a serum, apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser. A serum is an optional extra, not a requirement.
04Which uprise moisturiser fits when?
Hydrating Day Cream is your morning essential. Regenerating Night Cream fits into your evening routine. Both are fragrance-free. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, keep things simple for a few days: gentle cleansing, one suitable moisturiser and sunscreen during the day. Add other steps once the basics feel comfortable.
